In the centre of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine River, in front of the Tuileries Gardens, lies the Orsay museum. The museum is in the former Orsay railway station which was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
The national museum of Orsay opened to the public in 1986 to show the great diversity of artistic creation in the western world between 1848 and 1914. It was formed with the national collections coming mainly from the Musée du Louvre, the Musée du Jeu de Paume, and lastly from the National Museum of Modern Art.
